Henges and Stone Circles in Yorkshire

Yorkshire is overflowing prehistoric monuments and structures. There are dozens scattered across this ancient and beautiful landscape.

Many have speculated that they lie upon a network of Ley Lines in the area. This theory has been backed up by dowsers who have visited the sites.

Several stone circles may be found on the famous Ilkley Moor, a site that is notorious for its UFO sitings as well as many other strange occurances. Some call it the Capital of the paranormal world! Apart form UFOs other strange lights have been spotted and attributed to Will o' the Wisp, as well as ghosts and other strange beasts. An alien was even spotted walking across the moor in a well documented case.

Yorkshire is also the home of several of Britain's most important ancient sites including the immense Thornborough Henge, the largest and one of the oldest henges in Britain. This super triple henge is almost a mile long and 240 meters across making it the largest ritual site in the UK where many of today's current Pagans still perform rituals.

This map list several of the henges and stone circles that can be found. Click on the images to find out more. To view these henges on Google Earth open this link : Henges in Yorkshire on Google Earth

Yockenthwaite Henge Thornborough Henge The Druid's Altar Brackenhall Green Horncliffe Circle The Twelve Apostles Backstone Circle Henges and Stone Circles in Yorkshire

Yockenthwaite Henge
Ring of stones in the seclued Yockenthwaite Moor. For a long time this was thought to be a ritual stone circle but now it is more commonly believed to be the base of another ancient structure.

Thornborough Henge
The largest and oldest henge in Britain. On top of that it is a triple henge, each one a diameter of 240 meters. Sadly this internationally significant site that predates the Pyramids of Giza is in serious peril of being destroyed from nabouring quarrying that is shamefully biting into this precious monument and it's ancient landscape.

Druid's Altar
A four stone monument resting upon a 40 foot wide domed mound. Today only one of the four Limestone blocks remains standing. A fascinating and beautiful site with a wonderful view of the moor.

Brackenhall Green
Stone Circle or Enclosure in Yorkshire (West Riding) The circle is beside the road from Baildon to Eldwick, nearly opposite the Bracken Hall field centre. Nearby is a huge stone wall thought to be Iron Age.

Horncliffe Circle
A curious stone circle very close to the Horncliffe Spring. Some believe it to be an ancient cairn or perhaps some kind of Iron Age settlement building.

The Twelve Apostles
One of the more popular local henges also known as the "Druidic Dial Circle" and the "Druid's Chair." Many claim to see curious white balls of light in the area known as Will o' the Wisp.

Backstone Circle
A controversial circle that no-one can verify the age of. Some believe it to be a true ancient monument while others claim it is a recent structure. Either way there does appear to be recent ritual activity in the area.
